Currency: In 2005 (January 1st) Ireland adopted the euro. Most merchants you come across will not accept any other form of currency, including the pound or the dollar. So remember, before you head over to Ireland, convert the cash you are going to be spending.

Exchanging currency: The rate of exchange between the euro and the dollar is constantly changing, so it may be a good idea to keep an eye on the rates before you exchange. This will help you get the most value out of your dollar in Ireland. Also, it is a bad idea to exchange at places that have surcharges or fees, such as the airport kiosks and tourist “hot spots”. There is no need to lose money when you don’t need to.

Bring cash with you: It is always a good idea to have around 200 euros on you each week for incidental expenses. Some of these may be souvenirs, pub meals, tips, or toiletries. If your Ireland tour is scheduled for longer than two weeks, then it is a good idea to only bring two weeks of cash and get more as you need it. Make sure to check with your bank in order to have a good understanding of how to withdraw cash from Ireland.

Credit Cards: You may not expect to use your credit or debit card on your vacation, but it is still a good idea to have one or both of them with you on your Ireland tour. Before you depart from the United States, make sure to notify your bank of your vacation. Often, overseas transactions appear suspicious on bank statements, and result in the cancellation of that card.

Following a few common-sense tips like these can prevent headaches and greatly enhance your enjoyment of your Ireland tour. Bon voyage!
