Christmas is a time for many families to spend time together and make great family memories. One way to do so is with fun holiday activities and traditions. You don’t have to spend a lot of money nor do something really elaborate. Just doing simple and enjoyable activities can mean as much to your kids as the best Christmas present in the history of the world. If you are at a loss to at what free or affordable activities you can do this season, here are some great suggestions to help you.
Do Arts and Crafts with your kids. Rather than spend a lot of money on holiday decorations, challenge your family’s creativity by having everyone make decorations this year. There are many simple decorations that your children can make. You can have older kids do more challenging projects as well. If you don’t know where to start then you can do research online or at your local library.
Go to a Holiday show put on by your church or community theater group. You can take your kids to see a reenactment of the Christmas Story or take them to see a performance of the Nutcracker. Make sure to check online or in the community section of your local newspaper to find performance that are free and open to the public. If not, see if the ticket prices are reasonable for your family budget.
If you are fortunate enough in your area to have a White Christmas in your area you can play in the yard with your kids building snow forts and having snow ball fights. If there is a promising hill in your area you can go sledding. Make the winter season your natural playground. As you play make sure everyone dresses warmly.
You can make homemade holiday treats with your family. It seems now a days that too many of the foods we eat are ready made and store bought. Make this Christmas extra special by making some of your family’s favorite holiday treats from scratch. It can be as simple as cookies or as elaborate as a cake or fruit pastry. Taking some time to make theses delicious foods will add another rich memory to the holiday season. To make sure that you are actually saving money make a list of the ingredients and make a budget to get maximum savings.
Something else you can do is to go caroling with your children. There is nothing like going out on a brisk winter night with friends, family, and neighbors singing beloved Christmas songs and spreading Christmas cheer. You will help to brighten the mood of people in your neighborhood and do an activity that can become a family tradition and fond memory for your children.
You can also do small things to help your younger children believe in Santa. For one you can have them help you do some of the traditions like leave some milk and cookies and hang stockings over the fire place. These traditions may not seem like they do much but establish the expectations for Santa’s arrival. You can also order a personalized letter from Santa. This will be quite easy to do. There are plenty of online stores offering the service. All you need to do is customize the letters with some of the good things your kids did this year and what they wanted for Christmas.
